I would hate to leave a USB in the equipment and watch my config get fried with the device. I have several sites/buildings/floors/locations to backup configs from. Right now I am setting up/using Oxidized through LibreNMS. There is software that is great for this, some mentioned above. There are ways to script through Linux, if you are proficient or bored. So in summary, I setup automation of some kind. To go through the effort of manually TFTP, copy-paste, or copy flash-tftp seems like it would get in my way. It would take me longer to copy to TFTP than it would make the change. TFTP is great midday before you do something crazy, but there are small changes made quickly to resolve an issue that just needs done now. RANCID is nice, but I like it more for alerting a team to changes against equipment, so someone can follow up with I did this because Email. To avoid the perception issues, I prefer something that is automated and backs up the configs in some way. Most users/non-IT managers will not notice you backing up the configs, but you need a config backup. The more items that are important, the less we are seen as productive.
My personal experience states that IT is a bit hectic and we have to carve out time for the important things that no one else knows about.
